A pre-insurance inspection documents the existence and condition of your vehicle, including its mileage, physical condition, and existing options and accessories. New York requires pre-insurance inspections for most automobiles as a precaution against insurance fraud.

What happens if I don't get the pre-insurance inspection?
Certain states, including New York, require pre-insurance inspections. Unless you have an exempt vehicle, you have a grace period to comply. Failure to complete a pre-insurance inspection within the grace period will suspend your physical damage coverage (comprehensive and collision).
What do I need to bring?
Bring documents from your insurance company or broker with the company name, policy number (if known), and vehicle description. If you don't have documents, make sure to have the insurance company name.
What happens during a pre-insurance inspection?
A CARCO inspector completes a state-mandated form, documenting the condition of your vehicle, as well as its options and accessories, VIN, odometer reading, and other required information. In addition, the inspector will take photographs of the vehicle. Once the form is complete, you'll need to review and sign it. Next, you'll be given an official copy of the report. The original report and photos will be processed by CARCO and forwarded to your insurance company.
