Is It Time for Your Vehicle's State Inspection?

Ed Vintner is an authorized inspection site for safety inspections and emissions inspections in New Hampshire.

Do I Need Both Inspections? All vehicles registered in New Hampshire must pass an annual safety inspection, and vehicles less than 20 years old must undergo an On-Board Diagnostic / emissions inspection in addition to the safety inspection.

Safety Inspection Process

The New Hampshire safety inspection includes the following:

• Registration, plates, registration certificate & VIN
• Steering, front end & suspension
• Brakes, including parking brake
• Odometer & speedometer
• Electrical system, horn and defroster
• Lights and reflectors, including headlight aim
• Glass, glazing and mirrors
• Wipers
• Exhaust system
• On-board diagnostics system
• Body, chassis and bumper height
• Fuel system
• Tires & wheels

On-Board Diagnostics & Emissions

The On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system monitors the performance of light-duty passenger vehicles, including major components of the engine, such as the emission control components. The OBD alerts you when there is a defect that causes excess pollution. The best way to prepare for the emissions inspection is to keep your vehicle maintained throughout the year and per the guidelines in the owner's manual.

Inspection Results

State inspection results are electronically transmitted to the Department of Transportation. Vehicles that pass both the NH safety inspection and emissions test will be granted an inspection sticker valid for the same time period as the registration. If a vehicle fails one or both inspections, it needs to be repaired and re-inspected.
